The South Park Food Bank exists to serve community members in need in the South Park Area, namely, Jefferson, Como, Fairplay, Alma, and Hartsel. We have one monthly distribution day, usually the second Saturday of the month. We are also available to help people in emergency situations.
Last year we served 582 families and 1600 individuals. On average we serve from 30-60 families and households a month. In addition to our monthly distribution, we help provide snacks for Fairplay schools and the Boys and Girls Club of the High Rockies. We work with the schools to send “Totes for Hope” home with students who need food for the weekend.
We are grateful to be a partner agency with the Food Bank of the Rockies, however, the South Park Food Bank would not exist without the support and generosity of our community. Our work is made possible by amazing donors and volunteers. Volunteers help us receive, unload, sort, arrange, and distribute food. Volunteers pick up and haul food from grocery stores, Colorado Farm to Table, and many other sources. Volunteers help us clean and maintain our facility. Service Learners from South Park Middle School pack the weekly Totes for Hope.
We are funded by generous donations from members of our community and from grants, including the Summit Foundation, the Mountain Resource Center, and the El Pomar Foundation. We have also been fortunate to receive income from several special events, such as the Plein Air Quick Draw auction, Souper Bowl of Caring, Soups of South Park, and the Food Bank’s Socktober event. Community organizations and businesses (Fairplay Public Library, and the Forest Service office) allow us to keep donation collection bins in their buildings. The Van Baal family and the Town of Fairplay have supported the South Park Food Bank by allowing us to operate out of their facilities. We are able to put all of the donations we receive toward our mission of providing healthy food to those in need in our community.
